Does the media player of your choice have trouble playing back movies that have DTS or AC3 audio tracks in Windows? The problem is not from the operating system, but from the filters used by the media player. To mitigate the problem, all you have to do is install AC3Filter. This program is basically an audio processor and decoder that was designed specifically to work with AC3 and DTS audio streams. However, it can work with most other audio formats.
After you install the program, you can quickly change parameters such as gains, equalizer settings, SPDIF settings and even mixer settings. You can also change the speaker layout – as well as the number of speakers. Sample rate and sample format settings can also be changed.
AC3Filter allows you to select the format you want it to decode. You can choose from DTS, Vorbis, AC3, LPCM, PCM, MPEG Audio, and many more. You can also set the program as the default encoder on your computer so that all media players use it when playing back audio streams. Of course, you can also disable the filter at any time.
Remember that you must restart the media player after you change the settings of the filter. The new settings are applied upon the restart.
