This is a 3D printing software that lets you turn 3D models into printing instructions for 3D printers. It is a handy tool for people that are into 3D modeling and printing. The software breaks down 3D models into layers (a.k.a. horizontal slices) and creates a toolpath to fill them. It also calculates the materials that need to be extruded. This software can easily read AMF, STL, and OBJ files – while outputting G-code and SVG files. Interestingly, the features available on this software are pretty intuitive and anyone can use them without needing a guide or tutorial. You can also access the features via the command line; thus, providing an easy avenue for you to integrate this software with your custom toolchain and batch operations.
Furthermore, this software is available as an open-source program; it is independent – not coming from commercial printer manufacturers. The program is compatible with G-code dialects (Makerware, Marlin, Mach3, Smoothie, Repetier, Machinekit, LinuxCNC, Sailfish). You can easily customize the configurations using the available settings options. However, this 3D printing software is a bit advanced but yet intuitive. It can print multiple machines simultaneously, or push printing tasks to OctoPrint.
Slic3r is licensed as freeware for PC or laptop with Windows 32 bit and 64 bit operating system. It is in other tools category and is available to all software users as a free download.
